OUR ROSE PARADE CONNECTION
Now celebrating its 133rd year, the Rose Parade has an impressive history and Torrance’s connection to it runs just as long. It goes back to our city’s founder, Jared Sidney Torrance who was on the Board of Directors for over 130 companies/organizations, including the Valley Hunt Club. It was that company that sponsored the first Rose Parade in 1890 to promote Pasadena as a warm-weather destination for their east coast friends.
As the Rose Parade grew in popularity, the Tournament of Roses Parade was formed to take charge of the event during Torrance’s tenure as President of the Valley Hunt Club (1895-1896). In 1914, the City of Torrance joined the parade with their first float entry and won a trophy that year, which is on display at the Torrance Historical Society & Museum.
OUR 2022 TORRANCE ROSE PARADE FLOAT
We’re big on community, so every year the city sponsors a conceptual design contest that is open to high school students within the City of Torrance. The winning interpretation of this year’s Rose Parade 2022 “Dream. Believe. Achieve.” theme is called, “The Embodiment of Nature.”
Featuring a majestic African elephant and colorful toucan, it portrays the warmth and beauty of the animal kingdom to promote awareness of the many endangered species and the many perils they face. It asserts the belief that we can achieve the dream of protecting these animals and their home. No more hints! You’ll have to see it to believe how awesome it is.
And now the float is award winning! The float earned the honor of a Princess award, presented for most outstanding floral presentation among entries 35 feet and under.
A TORRANCE SCAVENGER HUNT
The Rose Parade is a tradition many in our community love to celebrate. In fact, this year the Torrance Rose Float Association is sponsoring a Torrance scavenger hunt. We’ve placed photos of several of our floats around the city for you to find.
Here’s where to look and what to look for. At the Discover Torrance Office (located in Del Amo Fashion Center) look for our 2020 float, “Our Garden of Hopes & Dreams,” and at the DoubleTree Hotel, look for our 1958 float, “Rocket to the Moon,” and our 1976 float, “100 Years of American Forestry.” At the Marriott, you’ll find the 2015 float, “Louis Zamperini,” and at the Miyako Hybrid Hotel, you’ll find the 2008 float, “Festival of Flowers.”
