A Guide to ADA Accessible Activities in Torrance

An inclusive community, Torrance has taken steps to make several of its most popular spots ADA-compliant and open to everyone. From the beach to its hotels and beyond this is your guide to all things accessible in Torrance.

Torrance Beach

This pristine, uncrowded Southern California beach, offers 1.5 miles of accessible shoreline to enjoy. Beach mats and a beach wheelchair are available to help you roll out to the sand. They are free to use on a first-come, first-served basis and there are no reservations. You’ll just need to request them at the nearest open lifeguard tower or headquarters.

Lifeguards are always happy to help and are grateful for your patience if you happen to catch them while they’re out on patrol or a call. They’ll be back soon. There are also wheelchair ramps over the sand, handicapped parking spots and semiannual permanent access mats available.

If you don’t already have your own wheelchair, you can reserve one at the Dockweiler Youth Center. You’ll need to give them at least 24-hr advance notice as well as show an ID and sign a waiver.

The Strand Beach Bike Path

This fully-paved bike path runs along the coast for 22 miles from Torrance Beach all the way up to Will Rogers State Beach in Malibu. There are many opportunities to stop for a rest or a snack, including restaurants, shopping and more.

Wilson Park Annenberg Tree House
The first universally accessible tree house in a public space in California, the Annenberg Tree House is quite large and a ton of fun. It’s a 2,500-square-foot wooden structure designed to give adults and children of all abilities a uniquely inspiring experience and a beautiful view.

The park also includes a 3,000-square-foot water playground with a user-controlled computerized system that’s open from April – October. Be sure to check their calendar as there are many events to enjoy during their Torrance Summer Nights.

Victor E. Benstead Plunge Aquatics

For the physically disabled, water is sometimes the most freeing playground, as it’s easier to move more freely when water supports you. They have open swim sessions and the pool is adaptive friendly.

Torrance Transit

Available to all those who are ADA-eligible, Torrance Transit offers two paratransit programs. Access Services provides curb-to-curb transport within a ¾-mile radius of any bus stop or Metro Rail Station. There’s also a Torrance Community Transit Program for residents of the City of Torrance that includes both Senior and Dial-a-Taxi programs.

City of Torrance ADA Assistance

Torrance is a pretty inclusive city. The City strives to be ADA-compliant at all events. Most businesses and parks also strive to follow ADA regulations, which leaves you many options around the city, including restaurants, museums and more.
