What is Yokocho?

“Yokocho” refers to narrow lanes that run perpendicular to main streets, or simply these lanes themselves. It is said to have originated around 1946, just after the war, with the opening of “black markets.” These were places adorned with red lanterns, hanging dimly but assertively, where many people passed through. As time flew from the Showa era to the Reiwa era, the unique glow of the lanterns remains unchanged, yet the people who gather there are not only Japanese but also many foreign tourists from abroad. If you catch sight of a red lantern peeking from a narrow lane off the main street, it’s definitely worth stopping by.
